AUGUST EMCEE SPOTLIGHT (INTERVIEW)
10 Questions - Versis
Darius: When did you start rhyming? Was it always rhyming or do you participate in other elements of hip hop?
Versis: I started back in middle school jotting down phrases/lines…never really writing full songs or verses.I kept on w/ that pattern up until late last year.
Darius: Where do you draw inspiration from when you are writing?
Versis: It usually spawns from me listening & just being a fan for a minute.sometimes it just shows-up.I could be watching a movie & all sudden an idea for a song is in the back of my mind.
Darius: Give us the names of some songs from other artists that you you left in the deck or kept hittin’ rewind to when you were younger.
Ini Kamoze “Hot Stepper”
Beanie Segal “Who Want What”(my big bro used to leave his tapes around)
A Tribe Called Quest “Find A Way”
Mos Def “Umi Says”
Darius: Since you started making music in high school, has your family been supportive of your decision of making hip hop music?
Versis: Man, even moms is giving me the thumbs up…she didn’t find out ’til a month or two ago;wasn’t hiding it from her, but I wasn’t really keeping her ‘in tune’
Darius: How long did it take you to complete the Synergy EP? Was it easy to balance making the music and your studies?
Versis: that took about 5 months since I was still in school;senior year started getting crazy…essays…school functions…(smh)
It wasn’t too difficult finding that balance though I caught myself slipping at one point…started losing focus.I got back on-point, though.
Darius: How did you hook up with Lucid for the beats on the project? What drew you to working with him?
Versis: Dude & I go WAY back;met him in Inglewood back in elementary school. He’s been doing his thing longer than me as far as production.
Darius: With a lot of releases being put out on the internet these days, how are you going to differentiate yourself from the pack? Do you have a strategy to get this buzz going and clear a lane so to speak?
Versis: The approach.I make it a thing not to hit people up telling ‘em to listen to my music.I DO make an effort to put it in front of them by way of status updates & such…
Darius: If you had an opportunity right now to work with any artist who would you choose?
Dude’s my favorite emcee on the West as of now.
Darius: If you are not working on your music what else can folks find you doing? What do you do in your free time? Or do you even have free time?
Versis: Promoting! haha
If I’m not making it, I’m listening…
Besides that, I’m just fooling around w/ people from school;getting laughs in.
Darius: So the EP is out and is getting a lot of recommendations out there, what is next for you musically? What can fans expect from your next release?
Versis: I’m starting to compile songs for a full length album.
Hopefully I can get features from some notable artist to put on that…
Darius: If you have any other thoughts…drop em and I will post em. Thank you for your time.
Versis: Though I was just a lil dude back then, I AM a 90s nostalgic MC!
Peace and Blessing go out to Versis and his Career!
